The Science Behind How Often You Should Wash Your Sheets
If your idea of adulting is remembering to pay your hydro bill and changing your sheets at some point before the next full moon… we need to talk. Let’s rip the (likely overdue) Band-Aid off and address one of life’s great questions: how often should you really wash your sheets?

The Short Answer:
Once a week.
Or, if you’re a pet person and your dog thinks your pillow is their throne: every 3–4 days.
Yes, it sounds excessive. No, it’s not a marketing ploy by Big Laundry. This is about science, sweat, and skin (yum).

So What’s the Science-Backed Guidance?
Let’s break down what’s actually happening in your bed every night – and why regular washing is more than just a question of cleanliness. (If you’re eating while reading this, maybe… don’t.)
You shed hundreds of thousands of skin cells while you sleep. A literal buffet for microscopic dust mites.
Your sebaceous glands (those lovely oil-producing things) are busy excreting natural oils, even if you shower before bed.
And speaking of showers: you sweat. A lot. As in, up to half a pint of fluid per night. That’s basically pouring a LaCroix into your sheets every time you sleep.
That sweat may start out odourless, but your skin’s bacteria (especially staphylococci) are on the clock, breaking it down into those delightful smells that make you wonder if you even did shower last night.
And if you’ve got pets? Multiply the bacteria, dander, and fur situation exponentially. You’re not just sleeping in your own microbiome—you’re in a shared ecosystem with your four-legged roommate and their toe beans.
Still Not Convinced? Let’s Paint a Picture:
You’re sliding into bed on Day 10 of “I’ll do the laundry tomorrow.” Your sheets have absorbed:
Eight nights’ worth of sweat
Dead skin cells from every possible crevice
That half-eaten cracker you forgot fell between the sheets
A few hairballs courtesy of Mr. Whiskers
And probably a rogue glitter from that one throw pillow that won't quit
Sounds cozy, right?

Why Weekly Washing Matters:
Reduces allergens and dust mites (they eat your dead skin, by the way)
Prevents breakouts and body acne
Keeps musty odours at bay (you know the ones)
Helps you sleep better, knowing you’re not marinating in microscopic gunk
Also, let’s not ignore the emotional lift of slipping into freshly laundered sheets. It’s the domestic equivalent of a deep exhale.
The Bottom Line:
You spend 1/3 of your life in bed. Would you wear the same socks for a week straight and call it self-care? Exactly.
Wash your sheets weekly. Every 3–4 days if you share your bed with pets.
Your skin, sinuses, and serotonin levels will thank you.
